The Pekingese was once believed to be able to ward off evil spirits. Historically, the theft of a Pekingese in China was punished by death. Chinese were once required to bow down to Pekingese. All modern Pekingese are descended from five dogs rescued for Queen Victoria during the Second Opium War. When British troops reached the residence of the Chinese Emperor, the guards killed all but these five dogs to prevent them falling into the hands of the enemy. Pekingese were believed to protect the soul of their master in the afterlife.
